I've seen both, and the movie about 8 times. Or more. I know some don't like it, but I am not in that camp. And I love the music.

I don't dislike it, it just can't live up to the mini-series. Ehle and Firth are far too iconic for anyone to stand a chance at dethroning them for the next couple of decades.
I keep thinking that I need to read Eliot, and it is your fault.

I've yet to read anything else by her, but by all means, read Middlemarch. Although I should probably add the qualifier that I've gotten used to the bloatedness of the typical Victorian novel, it doesn't bother me anymore but it may bother others. Middlemarch is less bad than most, but doesn't escape the trend entirely.

And considering the discussion about Mary below, I should say that Middlemarch has one of the most kick-ass deeply religious protagonists I've seen in literature, even though Eliot was hardly that devout herself.
