I admit that the evidence leans against it, but we can't say for sure since all the refutations involve little more than attacking the credentials of the stories based on the fact they are far later. It still resonates, since Amr did a hell of a lot of other bad things and stupid things.

And yes, it is the same pope that was popularized in Les Rois Maudits. It was fun to recognize him and see a totally different portrayal (and a far more negative one at that).

I think the parallels with Sherlock Holmes go a bit deeper than just pointing out absurdity, as well.
