How important is knowledge of Christianity for the book? I avoided reading the plot summary on wikipedia to avoid spoilers.

and I have not done in-depth studies on christianity. I don't know more than you learn as a kid in school (religion and history classes) and what you learn as common knowledge. Sure, you probably get more out of the book the more you know about christianity and the catholic church, but I don't think it's necessary to know a lot ("heavy stuff" ) about it.
