Having had several classes that were either directly focused on WWI or had it as a central element, your summation of that book makes me suspect that the author might be closer to a fucking idiot or a conspiracy theorist-leaning type of writer (same thing, pretty much) than anything approaching a credible historian.
On a tangential note, have you ever read Modris Eksteins' Rites of Spring? One of these days I'm going to re-read it and Paul Fussell's books and write reviews of them. 15-17 years ago, I had to discuss them in seminars, but I think it'd be interesting to revisit them 15 years after finishing grad school to see if my opinions have changed much.
