It'll be a few months at least before I tackle Mommsen in any language Larry Send a noteboard - 23/12/2012 07:44:42 PM
Since Harvard took over, they have been releasing books similar to the Loeb Library series for the Middle Ages, but so far everything is in Latin, Greek or Old English, so no Chanson as of yet.

I got my Mommsen in hardcover from Germany - it is indeed unabridged, in two massive brick-like volumes. Whenever you're ready...well, I won't be. I am reading Norwich's History of Venice and Burckhardt's Die Kultur der Renaissance in Italien in addition to the Procopius, which is somewhat depressing to read.

I will probably want a break after I finish reading these epic poems. But yes, it would be nice if more of these works were available in hardcover formats. At least the Bar-Sur-Aube I have in a decent hardcover translation, but that's from an academic press.

From the aesthetic point of view I think that Ariosto is recognized as the best. - 23/12/2012 02:54:43 PM 795 Views
I agree (all but the Bar-Sur-Aube I've read in the original language, with translations to help) - 23/12/2012 05:16:04 PM 788 Views
Since it's a short book I might just buy a paperback and hope Dumbarton Oaks issues a hardcover. - 23/12/2012 07:29:52 PM 682 Views
