I do keep looking for La Chanson de Roland in the Old French in hardcover and can't find it anywhere. There was one old one that amazon.fr wouldn't ship outside Europe because it was through their marketplace, and then that one disappeared. I found a crappy paperback version in lots of places, but I'm not going to buy that. Pléiade doesn't even sell one. I was able to get Chretien de Troyes, Livre du Graal (3 volumes) and Tristan et Yseult, but not that.
Reading the notes was an interesting experience, as it seems that in Morgante he managed to work in some very biting jabs at the Church under the guise of writing praises for Christendom. Some of the satire is surprisingly fresh for a work that's over 500 years old.
Political correctness is the pettiest form of casuistry.

I actually believe Italian to be the easiest Romance language

It certainly isn't the hardest (Romanian and then French might be that)

So by "purity" you really mean the simplicity and limitation on vowel sounds...

Yes, although I prefer it being in reference to a lesser range of variation in vowel sound to letter

You make it sound as though Medieval Italian is radically different from Modern Italian.

From the aesthetic point of view I think that Ariosto is recognized as the best.

Since it's a short book I might just buy a paperback and hope Dumbarton Oaks issues a hardcover.

The books are not as rigid as a cardboard-style hardcover, but they aren't very supple.
