I also thought it was pretty weak, relative to the series.

The next book is much much better. If I had to recommend the series to someone, I'd tell them to start either with Barrayar (7th in publication order! definitely shows) or The Warrior's Apprentice, the first of Miles' books (2nd in publication). I really liked Barrayar though.
