View original postStover's written what a lot of people agree are the three finest STAR WARS novels of all time (the RotS novelization, TRAITOR and SHATTERPOINT). He's also the author of a very highly-regarded SF/fantasy crossover series, THE ACTS OF CAINE (I'm due to start reading this soon). He's very, very highly regarded critcally.

Saw that on your blog, I've been considering reading it since.

View original postBrooks and Salvatore are not, to put it mildly. They're popular, sure but the last good novel Salvatore wrote is 20 years old now, and Brooks (though he's gotten better over the years) is still writing generic, MOR, unexciting stock fantasy at best.

They are rather in there with Kevin J. Anderson for ability to just spew out second-rate novels that sell well, though I've got a whole shelf worth of Forgotten Realms and Shannara books so that doesn't say much about my tastes. Brooks has definitely improved, I couldn't say about Salvatore, I ditched his stuff after Passage to Dawn came out and I think I've re-read Icewind Dale and tried one other since then, the better part of two decades is plenty of time to improve in and maybe he has.
