There was the long passage of time. There are hints in the early books of WoT that the oldest stories of Mosk and such were from our own world. Scholes and Jordan also cast the imagination to times in the more recent past with different levels of culture and technology.
I agree that I find contrasts and schism of magic and science to be interestingly done. I loved that science is the one with the quasi-religious structure around it.
