It's Rothfuss' Tom Bombadil moment. Bryce Send a noteboard - 20/11/2009 07:47:03 AM
Edit: I get that he needed a way to get in good with the townspeople near the Chandrian-attacked farm, but that dragon/sweeteater part of the novel sits like a weird blob I must poke with a stick. Accidentally running into Denna out there, having her eat something disgusting sounding and clearly Not Food, finding a druggie dragon and then having to save a town from it really doesn't feel like it fits into the story for me. He did have several other unexpected occurrences through the course of the novel, but this doesn't work well w/o some major disbelief-suspension, imo.

The whole "Dragon" story tangent serves no real purpose in the story. The story was starting to drag, and while "Real life isn't like a story" we have a fight with a drugged out "dragon", a rescue, a burning town. It just doesn't fit with the rest of the narrative, not in style, pacing, or purpose.

I look at that particular piece of the novel, and I think maybe he was just looking for a way to show how truly desperate Kvothe was to make contact with anything Chandrian, as well as remind the readers that the book was really about Kvothe dealing with the Chandrian. I suppose that after all that time at the University, that particular idea could have been lost and the reader would only think of Kvothe in terms of his relationship with Denna and with his story at school. I think there were probably a half dozen better ways to go about this, but yeah, that's my explanation for why it's there. I didn't feel as completely torn out of the story as some did at this part, but it was a bit distracting in an "all-too-convenient" sort of way.

Formerly Dark Prophecy, now I'm just me.
