I did read most of the books even the ones going back to before the time of the main story. I enjoyed them, but I do think the original storyline is better and I think a lot of it is the characters, but also, knowing what's going to happen in the end (or the future) made them a little less exciting.

Have you read the Crystal Singer trilogy by Anne McCaffrey?
It's my favorite of her books!
