I'm wondering if GRRM is using this novella to set up backstory revelations for ADWD, as THE HEDGE KNIGHT did for ASoS and THE SWORN SWORD did for AFFC. The original Dance of Dragons was the civil war between Aegon II and his sister Rhaenyra for the crown. Compared to the other civil wars we don't know that much about it.

The lord is Gormong Peake, so likely an ancestor.
I believe so, since the references (it appears twice, if I recall) are in relation to a notable bastard family of the past.
