Chapter XV is hilarious, where he notes that the world was pitched into "preternatural darkness for three hours" and yet the greatest minds of the age seemed to take no notice. He has all sorts of other thinly-veiled barbs against Christianity, far more than one would think even the Enlightenment era would approve of.

I say this because I had read seventeen chapters back in, I believe, the summer of 2000, and then stopped. I have now decided to read the book in its entirety and have gotten back to that point in 3 days after having started from the very beginning. It's a forced march of a read, really.
