The blurb makes me either take it to billing or put it back.
Otherwise, recommendations. it is the reason, for instance, I picked up The Gone-Away World.
I tend, for instance, not to read vampire stuff. Vampire stuff bores me. This also means I avoid the Laurell K Hamilton, Anita whoever, Kelly Armstrong sort of novel. - The paranormal chicklit/crime fiction/horror. (I think, marketing wise, there tends to be significant overlap?)
I made an exception for the Carrie Vaugh Kitty novels because Pat recommended them so heavily - I didn't regret it. I made another exception for the Dresden files because you and I watched the terrible, terrible series. I think I got tired of them by book five - with the faerie? But I intend to finish them at some point.
But if it's completely new, and I've not heard of it from anyone else, it's the title, cemented by the blurb. Almost everything nowadays is pretty, cover-wise, in some way or the other, so I just go, hooray marketing and forget about it after.

Blood oozing from the pages and the wail of innocents in torment whenever I open the cover.

I would say anyone with a passing familiarity with Lovecraft, but you seem to be an exception. *NM*

Very rarely do I buy a book that I don't know anything about beforehand...
