They're back to talking about Gove as Home Secretary. Werthead Send a noteboard - 12/05/2010 12:01:44 AM
Which would make more sense. Gove is a big military geek and I suspect would have loved Defence, but Fox has had that sown up for a while. I get the impression he'd prefer Home to Education as well.

However, that does leave the LibDems in arguably secondary roles with the traditional Big Three roles (Home, Foreign, Chancellor) all in Tory hands. Given the scope of the coalition I'd have expected at least one of them to go to a LibDem.

I was quite surprised to see Ashdown linked - he is an ideal person for the job but is also well known to be at the left leaning end of the party... and wouldn't be scared to say what he thinks. Basically he was too good for office:P

Ashdown would be pretty good in Defence.

"What do you know about military matters?"
"I was in the Royal Marines and ruled Bosnia for four years."
"Fair enough."

It's also notable that Brown offered Ashdown a role (as Northern Ireland Secretary) in his cabinet in 2007, so he is seen as a potentially viable figure, although more on the left than the right.
