Lighting a cigarette isn't exactly the same as firing a flare gun, people don't exactly spot it hundreds of feet away, and one assumes most of those standing near the theoretical Darwin Nominee joined him in the afterlife. I wouldn't be too surprised if this was caused by a smoker, I just doubt anyone witnessed it and lived to tell the tale.
