You know, as terrible as it sounds to say this (being a lawyer), the lawyers can really get their clients to fight endlessly or settle quickly, based on how much money the lawyers think they can make from the divorce. I'm sure if you were Hollywood stars this would be a lot more complicated. 
My ex boss (good guy but a TERRIBLE employer) made an offer to his wife on their split that he felt was fair.
Her lawyer talked her into fighting for more.
Some 7-8 years later and around 50k later, they finally got everything settled. And the agreement was virtually identical to the one originally proposed, save that there was 50k less money in it to split from the lawyer's fees.
