Price (readers): Amazon is a little cheaper than B&N, and they're both cheaper than the Sony equivalent.
A new Kindle 2 is about $259. A new NOOK with WiFi/3G access is 200 (less for just WiFi) A normal Kindle with WiFi/3G is slightly cheaper at $190, and the Kindle with only WiFi is, again, only 10 dollars cheaper than the NOOK.
Features: Amazon has more features than B&N or Sony. B&N offers chess and sudoku, Sony has a full touch-screen reader. Amazon has password protect, folders, popular highlights, share passages on twitter/facebook, the list goes on.
In what way? BN also offers lending between NOOKS, in store customer service at all Barnes and Nobles stores, takes ePub formats, and allows you to insert a small memory card for additional storage. They may not be the same features, but the NOOK certainly offers more than a couple desktop-type games, and the differences are DEFINITELY worth taking into consideration.
As far as the SONY reader goes, I believe the big "selling point" is the full touch screen capability. I've also read that it's a massive drain on battery power. Besides that, if all you want to do is read, then the SONY reader isn't bad. It just doesn't have as many "perks" as the other readers. In my main-reply below, I'll link some good comparisons online.
It's been a while since I looked at the B&N site, I'd forgotten about the Lend Me.
But a new Kindle 2 is only 189. Amazon dropped the price a couple hours after B&N did, about a month-ish ago. The new Kindle 3 (just went on pre order today) is being sold at the same price.
