that is nothing to get offended about random thoughts Send a noteboard - 10/08/2010 12:21:36 PM
So, the other day, at a semi-formal event representing my boss, an older gentleman approached me and started making small talk. After a bit, he commented on how young I seemed, I couldn't be older than 31. I chuckled and told him that my 24th Birthday is next week, and that killed the conversation. He was embarrassed that his guess was 7 years off, and I was a bit offended that anyone would think I'm in my thirties just yet.

31 is still youthful so what he is saying is after talking to you you came off as more mature then you looks would suggest. If remember correctly you are fairly baby faced and it can be almost impossible to tell the age of some baby faced men until about 40.

1. Would you be offended if someone guessed you were 7 years older than you are?

when I was 24? maybe but probably not. Since i am now 44 yes.

2. Do you think people assume "professionals" have to be older than 24?

Well since most of them are over 24 I usually do. I doubt we have anyone that young in my office.

3. What would you do if someone guessed that far off on your age?

Well if it was a kid I would laugh because they suck at guessing ages but other wise I guess I would try and get more sleep. Not really a problem though since I look damn good for my age and people always guess me younger;)

4. Is it better to be perceived as your actual age, or to be perceived as older/more mature? Is it better to be perceived as younger?

Again depends on the age. Men peak in mid thirties so being guessed closer to that is good.

5. I should just get over it, and realize that one guy is bad at guessing ages... right?

You should realize that when the young as guessed to be older is because they look mature. Being guessed older then you really is only a problem if they think you actually look old and 31 is not old:P
