That's why I said 'gain or lose' weight. On one hand, thin faces look older and thinness makes wrinkles more pronounced and a baby fat type face is associated with, well, young people. On the other hand, trimness/health is associated with youth as well. So the weight thing is tricky. If you lose weight, you'll most likely wind up looking older :).

But the one mitigating factor is that people base assumptions of people's ages based on how old they themselves are. So if the guy's in his 50's a 30 year old is still super young compared to him and maybe his mind wouldn't want to give you a younger age cause then he would feel gross.


He was in his late 50s, so maybe that could explain it.

1. Like I said, I would assume he's joking. If I thought he was truly serious I would be a little freaked out.

2. Depends how professional. Doctor? yes, older than 24. Random person in a suit with an unidentified profession and title? Not really.


Again, the second... I'm a Field Director for a political campaign... so a random young guy wearing a suit. ;)

3. I already said it, first I would assume they're joking, and then I would be disturbed.

4. Depends on the situation. In professional work situations, I guess the ideal perceived age is 30 or so. In non work situations, since I'm female and over the age of 22, I would prefer to be perceived as looking my age or younger.

5. Not sure. Like I said already, it could be just this one guy who wanted to flirt with you but not flirt with soomeone who could be THAT much younger than him. Or you could start using sunscreen (if you're not already) or stop smoking or gain or lose weight. (I have no clue what your lifestyle is or what you look like)


Losing weight would help... I'm working on that (the gym kills my soul two to three times a week)... but I've never been pegged at over 30. (8

So, the other day, at a semi-formal event representing my boss, an older gentleman approached me and started making small talk. After a bit, he commented on how young I seemed, I couldn't be older than 31. I chuckled and told him that my 24th Birthday is next week, and that killed the conversation. He was embarrassed that his guess was 7 years off, and I was a bit offended that anyone would think I'm in my thirties just yet.

1. Would you be offended if someone guessed you were 7 years older than you are?

2. Do you think people assume "professionals" have to be older than 24?

3. What would you do if someone guessed that far off on your age?

4. Is it better to be perceived as your actual age, or to be perceived as older/more mature? Is it better to be perceived as younger?

5. I should just get over it, and realize that one guy is bad at guessing ages... right?
