Ho hum, so the ping failed. Can you do me a favour and ping another website (eg. ' ping google.com ' ) just to be certain that he has permission to use the ping command at work?

If the ping to google works (4 packets 'received' on the last line instead of 4 packets 'lost'), it would seem like a firewall issue somewhere - either on the local computer or on the company network. If that's the case a number of free proxy websites may allow him access. If the ping to google fails, the investigation will continue!!
