You probably have some program running to take care of your mouse and keyboard, where the default action for clicking the mouse wheel is not 3rd button, but rather autoscroll or universal scroll or something. It is most impractical when using a standard webbrowser, which has as a default that clicking the middle button will result in opening the link in a new window.

With my mouse at least, the link in new window (well, tab, actually, but same difference) thing works, but when I click anywhere else than on a link, I get the autoscroll.
