I'm not assuming there's an underlying bad nature, I am saying she should look to see if it's there. Phelix Send a noteboard - 08/09/2010 10:27:21 PM
... just because they used a word that's so frequently thrown around as an insult. Quite often good naturedly, especially in highly macho arenas like rugby fandom can be. The biggest insult that macho blokes can throw at other blokes is weakness, and that's the meaning that faggot most often has in those circles.

I can't speak to those cultures because I don't know them very well. I do know in similar groups I've interacted with, I spent some time a box factory outside of Johannesburg, faggot definitely meant queer. I know South Africa isn't New Zealand, but they're similar enough in this instance, no?

It's like calling someone an arsehole. You just say it, and most often don't mean it.

But arsehole doesn't target a specific population and denigrate them. Everyone has an arsehole, and if someone is being an arse, you're calling them out for their behavior. Calling someone a faggot is different.

Yes, it is certainly becoming a horrible insult for homosexuals, but she probably heard it a lot from her older male relatives so it won't have that meaning for her.

She also probably heard its more recent meaning all the time in school and at athletic events.

The American influence really only became huge in the late 70s and early 80s. Faggot is a much older insult than that.

But she is not. She's 22, if I recall the article correctly, which means she would have been born in 88, well after the timeframe you put on the American Influence becoming big. She would have grown up hearing it in its more recent context and meaning as well as from older male relatives in the older context.

That's what I mean. So no, she doesn't need to "soul search". She needs to think before she speaks or tweets, or whatever. And she needs to remember the connotation the word has for most people around the world and not use it again. That's as far as it needs to go, IMO.

I think we're going to have to disagree on this one. I don't think a bit of soul searching is a bad thing. Anytime you hit a major bump, you should stop to look and think about why it happened, and this seems to be counting as a major bump.

If there's no underlying dislike for queer folk, fine, she'll go on, none the worse for having looked inside herself. If she looks, and realizes she does have an issue, she can address it.

What's the problem with that?
I was Phelix on wotmania, I will always be Phelix in the "real" world, and now I am Phelix on RAFO.

You will make all kinds of mistakes; but as long as you are generous and true and also fierce you cannot hurt the world or even seriously distress her.- Churchill
