There was never any deceit involved and they all hang out together and the like.

I am sure you can find some rare cases where it would work but most guys are simply to competitive with each other for it to work. I think there is a good reason some many societies have multiple men with one woman and the opposite is almost unheard of. Simply not knowing who the father is would cause tremendous problems.


I know it probably wouldn't work for me.

As to the rest, I think that's mostly cultural as in most of human society men tended to get killed a lot in wars leaving behind women and children who needed care - so the polygyny thing makes sense in that light.
