Insularity stifles interaction and creativity. At times, the level of discussion at this site is in variety akin to three generations' worth of incestual unions gathering together for a country dance. If it weren't for say a half-dozen people (I'm maybe being too generous with that number), then how long would it take for the hoi polloi here to become aware of certain emerging trends in fiction? Since I never posted about it here, but I bet no more than 2-3 at this site even know that I'm up for an award that will be awarded at the Capclave Convention in two weeks and that is minor in comparison to knowing which are the "hottest" books of the past couple of years

I'm not sure that's a very fair criticism of the people of this site. I think it's a fair criticism of the activity, but there are a number of people who for whatever reason choose not to partake in the discussions about the emerging trends, etc, even though they are quite well versed in those subjects.


Most of those I've seen who are aware of discussions and "hot topics" elsewhere appear to be those who are only secondarily active at this site compared to others they initiate and/or participate. All I have to do is point to the anemic participation in the recent awards thread at the Books MB and the excuses given.

I suppose I might just be remembering the good old days on the OF boards. Maybe I should venture around those parts more often and join in the discussions. I might have something interesting to contribute from time to time.


For me, the "good old days" were 2002-2004. After that, some things happened (or rather, didn't happen) and stagnation set in. Some of it was my fault (changing jobs several times, other commitments), some of it was Mike's, and some was just a few key posters leaving in one form or the other. I remember thinking ten new posts a day was a slow day on a three day viewing setting. Now there are days when there aren't even ten active non-stickied threads at the three day setting
