My philosophy book tells that "substance" (substanssi) means the basic matter of reality; autonomously existing, the ultimate essence of a being. And other things that are hard to translate.


I don't see why you couldn't think that the ultimate essence of the world is spiritual. If some sort of God existed, he'd be spiritual.
