It would be, Dutch "eu" is not exactly an easy sound for most foreign speakers. Do your grandparents (they were born in the Netherlands, yes, or is it a generation further still?) also pronounce it like that?

My Oma does, yes. It would sound weird if she said it the other way. Hehe. (My Grandad did when he was still alive.) And yes, they were both born in the Netherlands. Emigrated in their early 20s.

In Boehner's case, though, the pronunciation of "bay-ner" as I've seen reported in several places isn't even a "best possible approximation" of the original German, it just looks utterly random.

Tim says it's because Americans can't make the "ö" sound without an R, it's not a part of their language. (He used another word. I want to say lexography but I don't think that's correct. :P) And if you said it without the umlaut (Bohner) that would be embarrasing...
