I'm just trying to figure out if it was just me or if they really do talk that strangely.


They sounded to me like a cross between Americans and West Country farmers from England. It was the way they pronounced the vowels, everything else was a normalish American accent except when they hit an "a" or a "o" when they switched to an English farmer accent.
