Does running hot showers really use up a lot of heat?
It depends on how much water you use up, but also on the size of your hot water tank (the larger the tank, the more heat it takes up). Usually the tanks aren't too big in apartments, but hot water is still a significant cost.
What is your typical heating bill?

Ugh, I try not to think about it. Electric storage heaters are a very expensive way to heat a house.
