Kind of a recurring complaint of mine, with Randians in particular, but I guess their religion needs hymns as much the others do. It does seem to me, however, that the purpose Rush advocates isn't so much "clear" as "completely undefined" and while I'm all for free will, on that basis it seems like choosing not to decide; they demand that there must be rigidly defined areas of doubt and uncertainty. It's a debate I used to have with Urza, and more often lately have with Dan: Averring "Nuh uh!" affirms nothing in itself, it simply rejects an affirmation. I don't begrudge people their affirmations even when I disagree with them, but defiant rebellion without a cause is neither novel nor independent; it depends on orthodoxy for its meaning and relevance, and undefined theoretical unorthodoxy is bound up in the characteristics of orthodoxy.
