# Humans have more than five senses. Although definitions vary, the actual number ranges from 9 to more than 20. In addition to sight, smell, taste, touch, and hearing, which were the senses identified by Aristotle, humans can sense balance and acceleration (equilibrioception), pain (nociception), body position (proprioception or kinesthetic sense), and temperature (thermoception). [102] Other senses sometimes identified are the sense of time, itching, pressure, hunger, thirst, need to urinate, and need to defecate.[103]
Many of those are duplicates, and most duplicates of the sense of touch, pain being the most obvious. Unless one reduces "touch" to merely the awareness of contact, pain, temperature, itching, pressure and the need to urinate and defecate are all covered under "touch". Even if that's not the case, I'm not sure why there's a need to distinguish between "pressure" and "the need to defecate" AND "the need to urinate". I don't know about you, but usually the way I know I need to go to the bathroom is due to pressure.

That's not to say I dispute the position that there are more than five recognizable senses (time, hunger, thirst and balance seem good candidates, and acceleration as well as body position seem a function of the last), but most of those seem less true senses than examples of some peoples need to be contrary and pedantic (and, no, I see no irony in that statement; frankly, I'm surprised no one has yet raised this objection).

If we limit touch to pressure, yeah, pain and temp have to be separated.

I'm not sure how you can equate the feeling of pain with touch.

Because I think of pain receptors as being grouped with tactile ones.
