I love studying languages and think Irish is fascinating, but it has easily fewer than 100,000 people who actually use it and even fewer who use it every day. It's just about as necessary to learn for communication as Navajo or Sioux.

I mean, that seems fairly obvious. They can't make their entire population switch to Irish, obviously, but at least they can make sure the number of speakers doesn't dwindle further, and that all Irish have at least a basic working knowledge of the language of their culture and history.
