Cracking the uncrackable Enigma machine was pretty important to the Allied war effort by any reckoning. Of course the journalist doesn't mention that in the article, so I don't know if that was on Macintyre's list of reasons which could mean he was right for the wrong reasons... but still it is a fair claim by him.
