After all, the student's "contract" would probably still be with the school. And you could easily make rules that would be unobtrusive against making legal arrangements with outside parties.

The problem is with how things are now, it is NOT an exaggeration in the article that says the players aren't allowed to take fruit and drinks. Technically speaking, that is 100% against the rules. When us equestrian team girls would show on our own, we weren't even allowed to accept the bloody RIBBONS. Because of the differences between the equestrian sports world and "Real sports" (as others like to refer to them), the NCAA did finally make an exception for us that if our "winnings" were equal to or less than our expenditures, we were allowed to accept them. But my point is, that the rules as they are NOW are too much.

There needs to be a middle ground. The players should have the ability to accept little things like food and gas money.
