Uh, no they can't just join the NFL. They have to have 2.5 years out of high school. *NM* everynametaken Send a noteboard - 07/04/2011 04:49:07 AM
If they want to get paid.

To put it in an academic concept- I know, crazy, right?- say a post-grad computer science major, or maybe an ethnomusicologist, gets invited to a prestigious conference. She gives a presentation, dazzles everyone with her intelligence and perspective. She has now brought prestige to the college. Should she be paid?

Yes or no, it's irrelevant- depending on the school, she may have had to fight just to get funding for airfare.

So, no, I don't think someone who got a free ride to college based on the strength of his throwing arm should be paid movie-star money. I think he should be happy he found a skill that was, for some reason, valuable to the school, since he obviously couldn't get scholarship based on intelligence.

(And yes, I'm sure there are many intelligent, or poor, sports scholarship recipients. That's why I fully support merit and need-based scholarships. I just always get a bit irritated when people assign college sports too much any importance.)
