It probably isn't closer to Dutch than it is to Swedish and Danish.


Somehow I guessed :P

It could be that we have had a tradition of resisting latin-derived words.

We don't, so much... well, compared to English, but that isn't saying much.


Well, I meant that that may be why it was closer than Swedish and Danish. They, certainly Swedish, have a tendency to take on those words with great gusto. Norwegian has done it as well, somewhat, but it may have made us keep more of the Germanic ones we would have in common with Dutch.
