I'm a snob snob and I'm looking down my nose at you right now for misusing the word "snob"

Today I got a message from someone on an online dating site that contained the following:
"The only book that I read is the Bible. Other than that, I'm not a book reader.
I mainly like contemporary Christian music: Newsboys and TobyMac are a couple of my favorites."
There was more to it but... that was the important bit.
I wrote him back with what I hope was a very polite message:
"Hello.
Thank you so much for messaging me. You are quite a handsome guy! You seem very accomplished, kind, and thoughtful- all really important things!
Having said that, I am not sure we would get along very well.
I am an avid reader and I think reading books and talking about them is a pretty important thing in my life.
I have a rather eclectic taste in music and rarely, if ever, listen to contemporary Christian music.
Thank you for messaging me, and I wish you all the best in your search!
~g~ "
*sigh*
I am a snob, aren't I?
Not at all, snobby would be if he said he loved reading and listed the books he'd read then you had discounted him since he didn't read what you viewed as "real books".
ON TO THE SURVEY BIT!
_________________________________________________________________
1. Have you ever dated someone who doesn't read?
No.
2. Is reading important enough to you that you wouldn't date someone because they didn't read?
It isn't the result of deliberate intent on my part, rather I suspect that in establishing enough shared interest to date someone it ends up with the same result.
I think being a straight man might have helped me though - in my experience more women read than men.
3. Do you think music is fundamental enough to your life that it would factor into who you dated?
Yes and no - it wouldn't if it was just differences in favourite bands and genres but it would if it was at the level of loathing of the other person's favourites, since it would make life really annoying.
4. Have you been on any dates lately?
No.
5. Where would you suggest a book lover find... a lover?
Buy a white van, black out the windows, hang out outside bookstores, kidnap any hot men you see leaving with piles of books. Some might have to be thrown back straight away, if it turns out the books aren't for them... but sooner or later you'll find the right one to keep locked in your cellar until Stockholm Syndrome kicks in

Robert Graves "There is no money in poetry, but then there is no poetry in money, either."
Henning Mankell "We must defend the open society, because if we start locking our doors, if we let fear decide, the person who committed the act of terror will win"

Being picky about books is very different from insisting that there be some books.

I thought you handled it rather well. Looking for someone compatible does not make you a snob.
