Trouble is that now the odd post in the wrong place isn't a major issue... one to make a guess how much abuse will start flying at people when all they do is reply in the wrong place?

When it is a constant occurrence, some people will get angry about it. Or angry about why everyone keeps ignoring their replies, while no one pays attention to their misposted reply.

Or does one good assumption simply deserve another? ;) Remember, we're talking about the OPTION of a preferred display. So anyone replying to a nested thread in the wrong place set their display for nesting--meaning they'd reply in the wrong place now, too. Someone who replies in the wrong place to a paged thread won't mind a lack of direct replies because they weren't expecting any. If someone ALWAYS replies in the wrong place they'll probably get abuse but, while I don't condone that, it's understandable if someone insists on constantly posting in the wrong place even after (inevitable) corrections. Maybe I'm assuming to much to think most will learn from mistakes (particularly when pointed out repeatedly, as they of course would be) but I don't think so. It's not like people don't get angry about having to open every single response in a thread separately. Like I said, you can't please everyone, but giving an option is the closest we're likely to get to that.
