As a New Zealander, I mostly agree with you. But this one was apparently very shallow.
And don't forget that it was a 6.3 in Christchurch, New Zealand, that killed 181 people. That in a country with some of the most stringent building codes.

If I remember correctly, the scale is not linear. So a 5.8 is quite a bit lower then a 6.3. Something in the 6's will definately destroy stuff.
Yeah, see....we understand about the other factors in an earthquake. We live with them all the time. But the earthquake n00bs....they are excitable.
