The world's top ten and worst ten most livable cities Nate Send a noteboard - 30/08/2011 07:06:50 PM
The Economist's Livibility index for 2011 has been released, listing the top ten most livable cities and the ten least livable cities around the globe.

According to the report they rated the following factors: Stability (including crime rate, terror, civil unrest), Health (including health care and general health indices), Culture & Environment (including climate, corruption, social freedoms, restaurants, services), Education (private and public), and Infrastructure (roads, public transportation, water, housing, telecommunications, etc). You can see a full list of their criteria in the report, linked at the bottom.

This year's list:

Top Ten
1. Melbourne, Australia
2. Vienna, Austria
3. Vancouver, Canada
4. Toronto, Canada
5. Calgary, Canada
6. Sydney, Australia
7. Helsinki, Finland
8. Perth, Australia
9. Adelaide, Australia
10. Auckland, New Zealand

Bottom Ten (from "best" to worst)
1. Abidjan, Cote d'Ivoire
2. Tehran, Iran
3. Douala, Cameroon
4. Karachi, Pakistan
5. Tripoli, Libya
6. Algiers, Algeria
7. Lagos, Nigeria
8. Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea
9. Dhaka, Bangladesh
10. Harare, Zimbabwe

I'm happy that three Canadian cities (including my city) are in the top five. I like that Australia scores well too, as that would be my second choice of country to live in.

It should be noted that recent events, such as the Vancouver hockey riots and the rebel war in Libya, are not reflected in this report, so the rankings might change next year. I expect Vancouver will be hurt in the rankings especially. It was #1 in 2010, and dropped two spots due to traffic congestion. I imagine the riot will really take a bite out of their ranking.

Any thoughts on the rankings?
