I have MOSTLY simple tastes. Joel Send a noteboard - 15/09/2011 01:00:45 PM
That was somewhat mitigated recently by the discovery HEB often sells lobster for $10/lb. and will steam it at no extra charge. That means I just call them to say I'm coming, grab some garlic butter while I'm there and I can have the same meal I'd get at Red Lobster, still steaming, while watching the Simpsons in my underwear at home. :| On the other hand, I also recently discovered several other things:

1) About 50 years ago someone decided to import crawdads to Norway for aquariums.

2) After about a year he grew tired of them and dumped them in one of the local ponds.

3) Defying all laws of nature, they actually SURVIVED the winter and have become an established (if uncommon) Norwegian species as a result.

4) Crawdads do NOT, as I thought, merely resemble lobster (like languistino) but are in fact closely related.

In other words, I think I have to go crawfishing in Norway (though since it's already September I may have to wait till next year 'cos I think they're going to be hard to find soon.)
Bluebell icecream is what I miss the most when living outside the great state of Texas.

The wife is totally jonesing for Mint Chocolate Chip, for which she acquired a taste on her first or second visit. I prefer Dutch Chocolate, but there really is no substitute for Homemade Vanilla when it comes to floats. Unfortunately, Norway doesn't have root beer (though Sweden does) and even Dr. Pepper can be hard to find (I'll be picking up more from a particular 7-11 when I take my daily walk in a few minutes, but even with a discount for buying two I'm looking at $9 for two half liters). That means for floats I'm largely restricted to coke or pepsi (although if I go to the diner downtown I have another option: Floats made with Solo, which are every bit as bizarre as you'd expect.) Still, ribs for Christmas dinner; hard to argue with that. :)
