In cases like Ohio-Belgium, Washington-Denmark or Florida-Australia, the populations are more or less equal, so that means the comparison more or less works in terms of GDP per capita as well. Not so for others, like New York-Russia.
Reminds me of those commercials a few years ago about how if TX were still independent it would have the tenth largest economy on Earth; if its GDP is comparable to Brazils it would be seventh now--but its population is only about 1/8th Brazils. I expect Rick Perry to print T-shirts reflecting these facts momentarily....
