As Legolas says, that is essentially what PPP GDP is, and why I and others prefer it. Joel Send a noteboard - 16/09/2011 03:59:41 PM
To be honest I don't know what PPP really is but I guess it GDP adjusted for cost of living of the country it is in. The other nominal is probably more valid I just went with the first one I saw. Either way there it is a big difference and there are countries like the Sudan that would be a closer fit.

Validity has a lot to do with the terms in which you're speaking and whom you ask, but PPP is definitely a good attempt at leveling the playing field, IMHO. Remember how much more higher prices are in Scandinavia, and Norway in particular? That difference (some, but not all, of which is higher sales tax; surprisingly, income tax rates are comparable to Americas) means Norway has the 25th highest nominal GDP but 46th highest PPP GDP. Believe it or not, it appears the PPP listing is rather Americocentric; the US is the only country whose nominal and PPP GDP is the same number, which pretty much tells you who came up with the stat (the real shocker is China, whose PPP GDP is roughly twice their nominal GDP.)

A map. Because maps rock. US states renamed to countries with similar GDPs. - 15/09/2011 03:28:54 PM 1134 Views
