well there's some problems there LadyLorraine Send a noteboard - 21/09/2011 12:20:27 AM
I don't think charter schools are the final answer but the ones who succeed show us that there is a better way and it isn't just the kids and the parents. I think if we gave more power to principals we will have some dramatic failures but guess what we already have that. My daughter goes to a regular public and it is a great school and that isn't an accident. If you give parents choices they will pick the best schools and the worst will either improve or die. Charter schools are not the answer accountability and choice are the answer.

For one, principals don't just cause dramatic failures. They can ruin schools. The principal of my previous elementary school has driven out a number of good quality teachers by his refusal to do anything deviating from "the book", but his book is entirely based on test scores and the like.

Then when it comes to choosing schools, I admit I'm not familiar with the process, but what kind of information is available about schools? Like, beyond their base pass/fail/test score statistics. What kind of database would have to be created for that?

Accountability is something that definitely needs to take place, but I"m not sure how to do that in an efficient manner that would be consistent across a state, much less a region. I suppose it's something that we could drop that sort of standardization for all together (which I wouldn't be opposed to), and maybe just have one end-game test where you check to make sure people have an expected knowledge of basic subjects?
