Unless their advancement is so great they are VERY ethically enlightened, her fears seem valid.

They certainly are possible, but why don't think think trade agreements, diplomacy, friendship, etc...etc... aren't possible? They may be hard and people may WANT something else, but that's everything in life.
Prime directives are all well and good, but tend to get run over by survival of the fittest. Any species advanced enough for interstellar travel will almost certainly be able to take anything they want from Earth, so the only reasons not to do so would be that either we have nothing they want or they have some ethical reservations about seizing it rather than making a fair trade. If they are sufficiently advanced they might not even consider humans truly intelligent life, but just another animal that freakishly developed the use of tools because it happened to evolve an opposable thumb. In that event we would no longer be hoping advanced ETs do not treat Earthlings like the Conquistadors treated the Indians, but hoping they do not treat us like Europeans treated the Dodo.

Well just look at the history of Earth. And the cultural/advancement disparity would be FAR greater. *NM*

In one particular space opera, it's a mix and probably the best situation possible for humans.
