It's just a general trend that irritates me.

I mean come on. He didn't even cite his sources. He just said "From medical journals". That's a lot broader a knowledge base than most people realize, and a lot of "medical journals" are full of SHIT.

Remember, it IS just a syndicated column. It may be a step up from Mr. Smartypants Knows ("Mr. Smarty Pants gets his information from books, magazines, newspapers, the internet, radio, and television. He also includes facts he has overheard at parties.") but yes, an actual doctor with honest to goodness degrees and junk on the walls of a real life office probably is a slightly better source of medical expertise than a column printed in many free newspapers. The Straight Dope is, from what I can tell, (a lot) better than most such offerings (else the column would probably be forced to change its name) but not gospel, no.
He was right about soap getting dirty, however, bringing it nicely full circle.
