You called? Rebekah Send a noteboard - 05/10/2011 08:53:54 PM
1. Does anybody (besides me) use proper grammar when texting, posting on Facebook, etc.?

Yes. I refuse to abbreviate things, unless I'm just a couple of characters over the limit in a text. I do happily use &, though.

2. Do you correct somebody who uses incorrect grammar while talking? If not, do you at least do it in your head?

Rarely while talking; always in my head.

3. Do you wince whenever you read a particularly awful Facebook post?

Yes. A school friend wrote a comment on one of my status updates which was basically text speak. Missing out vowels, etc. I nearly cried.

4. Have you noticed a trend on Facebook where people don't even bother using periods to separate sentences anymore?

No, but most of my friends are more educated than that. :P

5. Have you noticed misspelled words that have nothing to do with 140 character length? (Today I saw somebody spell "do" as "dew";)

Rarely. I suspect this is more of a problem for Americans because of the number of words that are homophones in your dialect and aren't in ours. Do/dew is a prime example.

6. (Off topic) Are people whiny bitches on Facebook or what?

Quite. But it's fun to be that once in awhile so I can't complain about them too much.

7. Has anybody ever called you a Grammar Nazi?

Frequently. It's actually very useful in my job to be considered such.

8. Has Twitter and texting eroded proper grammar for today's youths?

I think lack of grammar schooling has done that. I very much doubt that young people use text speak or 140 character limits in formal writing. That's where you see real evidence of the erosion of "proper" grammar. It's less of a worry in informal speech/writing.

9. Have you succumbed to the 140 character shortcuts? How often do you text or tweet this way?

Rarely. Again, I'll use symbols like & quite a lot. But I've got a decent enough vocabulary that I can find concise ways to write what I mean. ;)

10. Were there any grammatical mistakes in this survey?

Yes, those Tom and Nate mentioned, and you're missing a full stop in your example of misspelled words. It should, of course, be inside the close bracket. (I think you Yanks call those "parentheses", which is another difference between our dialects.) :D
