I have actually been thinking of doing something like that. I think it would be the same small group of people who would keep donating time and time again though, and I don't really see why they alone should bear the cost.
It'll work out, or it won't.
... that I would be more likely to donate if I knew how much you needed. And if I could get Paypal working properly for me. It's kind of not my friend sometimes. Though it would be understandable if you didn't want to hold your hand out in order to get people to contribute to the operational costs.
If it was framed in a matter of "give money so that the site can keep running" I would be more likely to do so, compared to "give money and get these extra features", since I'm not really interested in the features. I know it works out to the same thing in the end ... but I guess that's just how my brain works.
Though I can only speak for myself, of course.

I remain unconvinced a few voices can drown out the rest in an internet environment.

the problem with the chat drama is spilled over into everything else

All the political crap would go there, like it does on those other sites.

Perhaps some might feel more comfortable posting if it were separate?

Probably the easiest solution is to have a filter instead, save the new board for a "Writers Board"

There is a reason we are seeing so much complaining about politics form certain people

Then you should know there are fewer conservatives on the site now.

That's arguably flawed reasoning, there's apparently considerably fewer posters overall now

To a certain extent. But the site's left lost LiterateDog and Chorabliss.

If people want to keep the place alive and interesting for themselves then they can do these things:
