I first started driving at 13. Of course, not legally. My parents used to leave together and my dad always kept the keys in his Toyota truck manual transmission. This was too much temptation for a young boy like me.
The only tricky part was learning to drive a manual by myself, but when I was 14 I finally got busted when they came home early. My mother wasn't happy, but my dad got in the passenger seat with me and told me to drive. After seeing me switch gears with ease he said, "You've been doing this a while, huh?"
He then said I couldn't take the truck unless he was home and I asked first, and only if I stayed on the back roads. I grew up in a farming community, so traffic has never been a problem.
Keep trying and you'll eventually get there. I've driven in NYC and it does suck, but worth it in the long run.
