He wants to make his ideas popular, he doesn't want to make himself popular. By running as a third party he will kill his ideas for he will split the republican vote and thus give the election to Obama.
But threatened to do it would remind the Republican system that libertarians are here and they are here to stay. If they are here to stay he gets more time to remind people of the good things libertarianism does and thus make his ideas more popular.

Furthermore it isn't just about him anymore, he has a big donor base and knows a lot of peoples names and number so he can always get donations from them. It is very likely that he will hand over his scepter to a successor perhaps his son who is now a senator of Kentucky. It is very possible that we will see his son run for president in the next decade or two.
